Q: I have no dance training and honestly feel uncoordinated when it comes to learning dance steps. I really feel like it would be a good thing for me to try the class, but wonder if it would be too difficult for me to keep up?
A: We have a lot of people who have never taken a dance class, and they do just fine. The method behind BeMoved® enables participants to learn basic steps throughout the class. Those steps are eventually linked together to make a short dance that can be done at a very basic level or can be enhanced with arms to make it more difficult. The more you take, the more you will find yourself adding the challenges. I would encourage you to take a class and see how you feel. Be sure to introduce yourself to the instructor and let that person know this is your first BeMoved class. They'll see that you receive the necessary instruction.
Q: Is BeMoved for dancers only? Do you need to know how to dance to participate?
A: Everyone can participate. BeMoved was created for a spectrum of adults, from those who have never danced and want to include fitness in their lives to those who are active on a daily basis and have dance experience.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Whatever you wear to the gym is what you should wear to BeMoved. In class, you'll see gym shoes, running shoes, socks and bare feet. We leave it up to you.
Q: How do I pay? A: When you arrive at the studio, pay at the sign-in desk.
Q: What was your inspiration for adult classes like BeMoved?
A: I started teaching a class for post-professional dancers and designed the class to respect any physical limitations while keeping it stimulating on an artistic level. The response was so positive that I felt that adults with no formal training would also like, and benefit from, a class created especially for them.
Q: What are the benefits, besides the physical, of beginning or continuing dance at an older age?
A: I believe dance benefits many aspects of our wellbeing. It stimulates our mind, lifts our emotional state and spirit, keeps us connected socially, enhances physical confidence and vitality and engages all the aspects of our being at the same time.
Q: What is your favorite part about working with adults?
A: I find it deeply gratifying to nurture a demographic that often puts others before themselves. I also enjoy being connected to people who are close to my age. I am 52 and as a choreographer, director and teacher I almost always work with people who are younger than me.
Q: Do you have any advice for adults over 40 looking to begin a dance regimen?
A: Yes, take BeMoved! It’s the one class designed especially for you!
